Uncertain Cities 2024-25

It was always sinking, this city.
And yet, here it is, enduring the weight of the present.
Enduring the weight of the past.
And the past is never as fixed, as certain.
Interpretations shift meaning.
Words escape definitions over centuries of use.
Is there a difference then between sinking and floating?

Artist notes

And so I return, in spite of myself, as if this was the beginning of a journey I didn’t realise I was on. A journey between earth and water, between then and now. I wake and set out across the city, crossing the water by boat, watching as the boatman weaves the oar that sets us in motion. It feels mythological, this crossing. One shore to the next. A crossing of an inner and outer waterway, to step on and off of shores that extend inwards as well as outwards. A crossing of worlds. This is the return then, to be reminded of the daily commute between shores. The distance between one life and the next. Always treading on those that came before, and remain present. It’s the reminder that nothing is ever lost, for ever.
