Continuum

Silence. Not silence as in the absence of sound. But rather the absence of noise. Or say, the sound between sounds. Or someplace deeper…the sound at the heart of sound. Imagine diving deep, beyond all the layers, all the distraction, all the detours, all the false and fake, all the noise and noisemakers. Deep into the heart where silence and sound are one. Where silence has a voice. The silence from beyond the beginning of the universe, from beyond the beginning of time and the ending of time. Expansive of possibility. An enduring presence. Found in a shape. Dappled light. The distance between the eye and the setting sun. The eye and moonrise over the mountain. In the fall and flow of water, there is a silence. In the moment sat here, the half-drunk cup of tea, silent. In a line of poetry, obviously. In music. A note held long after the sound of it has disappeared. And waiting has its own silence. Immeasurable. A fine filigree threaded through chair and door, through candlelight and sunlight, through the passing hands of the clock.

The silence in one voice to waiting to return.

Artist notes

All the Light That’s Left Us (2025)

Sometimes it is possible to measure silence. The silence in morning light, the creep of it, deft beneath the curtains. The return from night darkness, from the underworld. The curtains hang still, breathless, as if a waiting rubicon. Dare not part it. Dare not cross. Dare not interrupt the invocation. This now, between two worlds. Silence stone cold, falling. Silence as lead-heavy, feather-light. Both. And neither. Silence is its own message and messenger. Its own language and line. A stone thrown, ripples on the surface of a pond, on the surface of things. Echoing out and returning. The returning silence, in the arced wheel of the gull’s wing, in the skein of light out there across the offing. There is silence in the whip of wind across the face. And silence measured in the body. Incoming silence. Cells silent. The silence of lung and mind. Arterial silence. That moment between each heartbeat until even the heart is silent. As movement stopped. Held motionless. Outgoing silence. Bone silent. Between the ribs. I hold you dear. In a silence as silent as. Winter. As night fall. And there, where the words drift like motes. Gather beneath the door stop. Stay unspoken. Until.

Continuum is a journey into the heart of silence, the heart of what endures, and what can remain.
