icaria

What does it mean to fly? Flight as freedom. As rising upwards into the limitless expanse of sky. As in the perspective of infinity, freed from the constraints of gravity. And wings, forged by hand, wrought from the broken fragments of the self, bound together by the sinew of will and desire. Evolving always into something new, something yet to be and never before seen. The unfettered self.

Artist notes

The Icaria are female Icaruses, who have made their wings themselves from the work of their own will, their own lives. In a traditional patriarchy, women are not free to ‘fly’ outside of their proscribed societal roles - there is a limit to their freedom, which means no real freedom. If freedom to be and become is the natural evolution of each individual, then the Icaria represent those who determine to take their freedom and rise to become their fullest selves, unlimited by societal restriction and demands. A tribute and inspiration for all those who wish simply to be.
